How We Got Started

AppNexus cofounders Brian O'Kelley and Mike Nolet gained much of their expertise in cloud computing and high-transaction IT infrastructure at Right Media, where they created and managed the first successful online ad exchange. That exchange handled 100,000 transactions per second with 99.97% reliability across more than 2500 servers located in five US states and the UK.

After Right Media was purchased by Yahoo, Brian and Mike decided to use their expertise to help companies build and manage their own enterprise-quality infrastructures. They knew what an expensive, painful process such an endeavor is, and they knew what it's like to have to predict demand months in advance, only to find you've either overspent or don't have enough capacity to meet customer demand. They saw that cloud computing could make taking care of infrastructure easier and more cost-effective.

The AppNexus Team

Brian and Mike didn't build the AppNexus cloud alone. The AppNexus engineering team comprises people who worked on the network infrastructure of Sony and MySpace as well as the Right Media Optimization System.
